Risk Management in Blackjack Tournaments

Risk management is one of the most important parts of blackjack tournament strategy. Because you are competing against other players who are likely to have a strong knowledge of basic blackjack strategy, going into a tournament armed only with basic strategy is not enough. It is important to become a master of risk management as well.

Risk management in blackjack tournaments refers to the size of your bets. Placing a minimum bet greatly reduces your risk of running out of money before the end of the round. However, it may not lead to enough winnings to get you into the next round. Risk management involves knowing when you hold back with minimum bets and when to take the risk and place large bets in the hopes of getting ahead.

There are players that take huge risks right off the bat in blackjack tournaments. They may go all in on the first hand, hoping to double their bankroll. However, this is a truly risky betting decision. After all, with this strategy all it takes is one loss and you're out of the tournament.

Plan your own strategy based on the other players at the table. Hold back during the first couple of hands to see what kind of risks the other players are taking. If there are a couple of all-in players at the table then you can afford to hold back, placing mostly small bets. Just focus on hanging on to your own bankroll, as it is likely the players will the all-in strategy will be bankrupt before the end of the first round.

On the other hand, if you notice that all of the players at the table are playing slow, placing small bets to hold on to their chips, then you should start taking risks to get ahead. Place bigger bets than the other players every few hands, though never put up all your chips in one hand. Your main objective is to be in the top percentage of players at the table so you can move on to the next round.

If you learn to manage your bankroll effectively you can greatly increase your chances of making it to the final table, and winning in blackjack tournaments.
